STEP FOUR:  Islamic civilization and history

It is now time to look at Islam from a historical perspective and explore Islamic civilization. The origins of much of today's chemistry, mathematics, and  sociology are found in the Middle East.

* Part 1 : Past

Compile a list of contributions that have come from Islam and the Middle East. Each of your team members will explore one of the following areas and compile a list of accomplishments throughout history. Once the information is gathered, report your findings to the rest of the team  and produce a TOP TEN list in order of importance of contribution to our world today. There is no "right or wrong" order, but be able to defend your list.

1. Chemistry
2. Mathematics
3. Medicine
4. Astronomy
5. Exploration
6. Art
7. Architecture
8. Military Conquest

Each report should include as a minimum: names, dates, location, events, importance to the world at that time, and importance to the world today.

* Part 2: Present

Report on the following topic as it relates to current events. Each of your team members will explore one of the following areas and compile a list of specific issues within each area. Once the information is gathered, report your findings to the rest of the team and produce a TOP TEN list of the most important issues in the news today. There is no "right" or "wrong" order, but be able to defend your list.

1. Women in Islam
2. Terrorism
3. Views on Israel
4. Consumption of Alchol
5. Human Rights
6. Oil and political power

Each of the following topics should be included : what is being reported in the news, what the viewpoint is based on Islamic teachings, and any necessary background needed for clarification. Be sure to indicate if something is an opinion or a documented fact.
